Safety Recommendations For The Subscribers Of Telecommunication Operator \ Mobile Operator
Cloning of the SIM card.
The information from the SIM card of the cellular mobile telecommunications operator, which fell into the hands of an attacker, can be copied (cloned) into the computer’s memory, and then transferred to a “clean” SIM card. After that, it can be exported abroad and activated in roaming mode. However, invoices for the provided communication services will be exposed to the owner for which it is registered.
To protect against this type of fraud, you should never transfer your SIM card to third parties, especially strangers. When you receive a phone or other communication device for repair, you must remove the SIM card.
In case of loss (theft) of the phone (SIM-card), you must immediately contact your mobile operator to provide services for its blocking. Especially should follow these recommendations in case of loss of the phone abroad in order to avoid charging the debt for a large amount (when using the phone by intruders), which will have to be made upon return to the Republic of Belarus. It should also take into account the fact that bills for the use of mobile communication in roaming mode are exposed by the operator to users not immediately but after a sufficient amount of time.
Request for help.
A fairly common type of fraud. The subscriber receives an SMS requesting help. There are a lot of options for such messages, but they have one essence. For example: “Mom (dad, sister, brother, etc.), I write from someone else’s number. My phone ran out of money. Urgently put so many rubles per number … “There may be reports of” getting into an accident “,” trouble with controllers in public transport, “etc.
To protect against this type of fraud, it is always necessary to clarify the information received from relatives, friends, acquaintances.
If you want to call back to the number from which this SMS came, it is worth paying attention to it. Since this can be a short number or number of a foreign operator.
Erroneous payment (“Return money!”).
There are several schemes of this fraud.
SMS can come from both the cellular operator (the attacker actually added to the balance of the user’s mobile phone) and from an arbitrary number, repeating the “original” message from the operator. And in the first case, money, as a rule, is credited to the account of the subscriber, and in the second – no.
Then, a call to a mobile number of the subscriber can be received asking for a refund of money to a certain number of the attacker for an erroneous payment. The subscriber, having confirmed his consent to return the money, transfers the indicated “erroneous” amount to the mobile number of the attacker. In the first case, the attacker applies to the cellular operator and re-transfers the amount of the “erroneous” payment from the victim’s account. The second variant of the development of events assumes that the subscriber actually does not receive any money, and the subscriber shares his money with the attacker.
In order to protect against this type of fraud, it must be remembered that all operators have a proven procedure for returning erroneously paid funds to replenish the balance of someone else’s phone number.
In case of such a situation, it is not necessary to transfer money to an unknown subscriber number, but it is recommended to advise the caller to contact the mobile operator in order to resolve this issue.
Incoming calls from unknown foreign numbers.
This type of fraud is also based on the subscriber’s inattention.
For example, deep in the night, the subscriber receives an incoming call from abroad, which is immediately discarded, and the subscriber does not have time to answer it. The subscriber, being in a sleepy state, calls back to the unreleased unknown foreign number, and after establishing the connection either hears nothing, or he turns on his answering machine. At the same time, money is written off from the subscriber’s account.
To protect against this type of fraud, the subscriber needs to check the number of the mobile operator, to which he is going to make a call, and without the need not to call back to unknown foreign numbers.
Strange numbers of incoming calls and SMS.
This type of fraud involves the activities of intruders related to the illegal termination (originating) of voice traffic, bypassing the proper switching centers of telecommunication operators authorized to pass international and (or) internetworking traffic, and (or) using the IP telephony service in violation of the procedure established by law.
In order to counteract this type of fraud, a subscriber can contact his mobile operator and report such a fact. The telecommunications operator, having carried out the necessary actions, will be able to stop illegal activities of third parties on its network.
Calls from the “support” of the mobile operator.
Attackers are represented by the technical support staff of the operator and under various pretexts (late payment of the bill, technical problems, accidental blocking of the subscriber number by the technical service, malfunctioning of the equipment, translation of the operator’s equipment to work with other voice codecs, etc.) offer the subscriber or transfer money to the number indicated by them, or pay a fine, or call back to a short number to solve the problem or to the phone number on which answering machine will be activated to the “recommendation”, what actions to take the subscriber in the future.
In order to exclude this type of fraud, it is necessary to remember that cellular operators always invite a subscriber to the firm’s sales center for their services in order to solve all the problems that have arisen.
The caller’s phone receives a call (it is also possible to receive SMS). At the same time, the caller is represented by an employee of a well-known radio station, bank, television channel or travel company and congratulates the subscriber on winning a valuable prize, a tourist trip, etc.
In order to receive a prize, the subscriber is invited within the next few minutes to call back to the short number of the specified company, where the subscriber is once again congratulated on winning a valuable prize and is offered to pay, for example, a winning tax, transferring money to an electronic wallet or giving an employee Express payment cards for communication services for a certain amount.
After that, the deceived subscriber comes to the office of a well-known company for the prize and learns that there was no rally.
In order not to become a victim of such fraud, do not rush to call back to short numbers and send money to electronic purses of various payment systems. The surest way is to contact the office of the named company, TV channel, radio station, bank or travel agency and on the spot to clarify all the issues related to possible winnings. Do not forget that, as a rule, companies always cover the course and results of various rallies and actions in the mass media.
